Surfing

The South Coast Surfing Academy Program is offered in partnership with Surfing NSW and South East Sports Academy (SESA).

The program provides high performance training opportunities for talented young surfers from the Illawarra and South East region of NSW.  The program supplements any home based coaching / training program that the surfer has in place. The program provides surfers with skill assessment and development, education, strength & conditioning and personal development. 

The IAS Surfing Program is designed to support the developmental needs of the regions young talented surfers by providing industry leading high performance sport development programs. Scholarships are offered for a 12-month period commencing in October 2017 and concluding September 2018. Scholarship holders will be required to undergo an induction process, attend weekend training camps, and participate in academy activities.

The program provides high performance training opportunities for talented young surfers from the Illawarra and South East region of NSW.  The program supplements any home based coaching / training program that the surfer has in place. The program provides surfers with skill assessment and development, education, strength & conditioning and personal development. 

The surfing program will include two 2-day training camps and three 1-day satellite training days plus the opportunity to participate in competitions. The squad will be divided into a Northern Squad (Illawarra and Shoalhaven) and a Southern Squad (Bega and Eurobodalla), with satellite programs being held in each area. The whole squad will come together for camps.

IAS Scholarship holders are expected to attend ALL scheduled IAS Surfing sessions in addition to club, representative and other sport commitments.

The IAS along with its sponsors and supporters covers the majority of the costs associated with the sports scholarship program. Scholarship athletes may however be required to contribute to some additional components of the program such as camps and tours.

New athletes are required to purchase the basic IAS Uniform which while partly subsidized by the IAS, is a cost to the athlete.

The IAS is committed to the development of the holistic athlete by providing elite training in surfing specific skills development, athletic movement development as well as an elite sports education curriculum

                      

 

Sports Specific Skill Development - SSSD

IAS Scholarship athletes are provided elite surfing skill development programs and exposed to high quality instruction from the region’s leading surfing coaches. Athletes are provided training in surfing specific skill areas as outlined by Surfing NSW


Athletic Movement Development - AMD

IAS Scholarship athletes receive a comprehensive Musculoskeletal Screening and individualised pre-hab exercise programs as well as an athletic movement competency screening with specific high performance resistance training programs designed for individual athletes needs in line with the long term athlete development program. Additionally, scholarship holders will receive surfing specific physical testing in line with the requirements of the Surfing NSW High Performance Unit.

Elite Sports Education Curriculum - ESEC

IAS Scholarship athletes will complete an education curriculum covering sports specific topics including sports nutrition, performance psychology, drugs in sport and athletic movement & injury prevention as well as personal development topics including athlete professionalism, goal-setting & time management and media awareness & public speaking.

Education sessions will be in the form of workshops and will require athletes to complete a home task as well as an online assessments towards the end of the scholarship period.

To be eligible for a South Coast Surfing Scholarship, athletes must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Reside within the Illawarra Region i.e. Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Wingecarribee or Wollongong Local Government areas; and
  • Female and male athletes turning 13, 14, 15 and 16 years of age in 2018 

Complete an online nomination form and attend a selection trial.

Selections will be made based on athlete nominations, previous achievements and potential to progress within the sport of surfing. (NB: the proposed trials have been cancelled)

If an athlete has a NSW Ranking, this will certianly be taken into account during selection. 

Feedback will be given to all surfers who do not get selected into the squad.
